Now this one makes me want to go and buy some makeup. Not like today's scary make up counters with their intimidating orange faced ladies or the self-serve section at the local K-Mart, where you're more like to find Max these days. Max Factor cosmetics, Her Majesty's Arcade, Sydney. I'm not familiar with Sydney at all, so I wonder if the store front still looks similar? Anyone know? I love the Moderne styling!

Yesterday we partook of the Inter-war housing walking tour in Ballarat. Here's some nice housies for your enjoyment...I want to move in!

This car happened to drive past...shame about the old Ford in the background!

I think this one was 1935 designed by HL Coburn.

Built by George Burchett.

I think this one is credited as "first appearing in rate books 1939".

Again, I think this one is "first appeared in rate books 1931".

Shame about the TV antennas, we could be back in time.

Victorian fence, so I'm guessing they knocked down the original house to build this lovely one.

So very English. I think this is another HL Coburn house.

Bernice is indeed a bit excited! Apart from lots of nice visits from lovely friends following this post, there was a visit to the Art Deco exhibition yesterday at the National Gallery (where I noticed lots of David Thompson's wonderful photos) and now, also via David's blog, I found this. Hooray for Art Deco in regional Victoria.

In contrast to the yellow kitchen, here's one I found via the Shorpy blog. And I must admit, I love this one too, for it's simplicity. Add a refrigerator and a kitchen table, and I'd be right. I rented a flat up until 1993 that still had a similar stove and it worked perfectly. So I'd be happy to have this in my house. The view out of the window is rather ordinary though.

Here's a bedspread pattern from 1946. I bought this because I like the drawings on the front, I don't think I'll ever sew up a bedspread and dressing table skirt, although the little pink dressing table does look appealing!

Yesterday at the Thrift Shop

I was scoping out the china section (which is my fave - obviously). I'm sure the staff must nickname people like me "plate turners" as I've seen other people doing it too, turning all the old china upside down to see the backstamps and gauge the age and value of the pieces. (Why do Savers persist in sticking the price labels in the very middle of a cup or saucer, over the backstamp? Grr.) I don't actually care if something is valuable or not, but as I collect Meakin, Grindley and Art Deco china, I like to know what I'm getting. Today someone had donated no less than 50 pink saucers, but alas, no cups. Some were Johnson Brothers, and some were J&G Meakin, so I grabbed a couple of those and added some nameless gold rimmed tea cups. Hurrah, but $$ value climbing. I also found a tray - I was after one for my desk at work - and a little kittah salt shaker of kitschy goodness - Made in Japan, 60's I'd say. Hurrah! So the cup and saucer don't match, aren't valuable, but I think they work well together, and that's what I'm about...gorgeous useable china!

I found these old signs in a row of shops in Clunes, Victoria. It was a boom town during the gold mining era of the 1800's and the town has preserved lots of the historical buildings and old architecture. My favourite is the Art Deco booksellers store front, how I would have loved to pop in there once upon a time for some magazines and stationery!

Here's a lovely colourful cover from the Australian Home Journal of March 1959. I love this magazine, as it is a good read, and has recipes, sewing, film reviews, questions and answers and all manner of homemaking hints. Plus, every month it came with paper patterns of dresses to sew. One day I might even try making a dress from one of the patterns. In this one, the blue dress is my favourite, so girly.

All my old needlework magazines have lots of ads for gifts that you can get in return for selling subscriptions. Its difficult for me to comprehend if the gifts were good value for the work of talking others into magazine subscriptions, and if the items were expensive luxury items for the era. This page from Needlework magazine of the 30's caught my eye because it was in colour, and particularly charming.

Jumping forward a couple of decades, here's a Lux soap powder ad from 1944, that appeared in the Ladies Home Journal. I particularly like the vintage laundry product advertisments, as they take the task of doing the washing so seriously, and every product promises "the whitest whites", to "take the drudgery out of wash day" and now to keep your clothes looking like new! I can appreciate what a chore wash day was, as my mother had an old tub washing machine with external ringer that she did all the washing in up until I was about 20 years old (in 1990). She now LOVES her automatic washer, and I don't blame her.

My mother had a pin tin like this in her sewing basket when we were young. I still covet these tins today...my favourite colour combination, and so so pretty!
